November is National Diabetes Month

November is National Diabetes Month and the OctariusRx team recognizes and supports efforts to educate and prevent diabetes and its associated complications.  This is an epidemic and many of us are at risk without even knowing it.  Others are living with diabetes and are completely unaware.  It’s time to get educated about our own risks and how to help others.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are thirty million adults over the age of eighteen living with diabetes and eighty-four million with prediabetes.  Among those over the age of sixty-five, the number jumps to 1 in 4 with diabetes and as many as 1 in 2 have prediabetes.

The most common form of diabetes is type 2.  Although there are many potential complications, such as heart disease and stroke, they can be prevented or delayed through structured lifestyle modification.  What is lifestyle modification?  It’s a program that promotes weight loss, healthy eating, and increased physical activity.

The CDC plays a critical role in preventing and delaying complications through its National Diabetes Prevention Program. This is a partnership of public and private organizations that was formed in 2010 to work to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. Partners make it easier for people at risk for type 2 diabetes to participate in evidence-based lifestyle change programs to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes.

Through the lifestyle change program, which focuses on healthy eating and physical activity, people can cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% (71% for people over 60 years old).  If you’d like to find out if you have pre-diabetes, take the test below.  Our team works with patients and facilities to encourage lifestyle change, reduce the use of medications, and improve outcomes.  If you have pre-diabetes, diabetes, are at risk, or know someone who is affected, contact us and let us help you.
