November is National Diabetes Month

November is National Diabetes Month and every year the OctariusRx team recognizes and supports important efforts to educate and prevent diabetes and its associated complications.

This is an epidemic and many of us are at risk without even knowing it. Others are already living with diabetes and are completely unaware. It’s time to get educated about our own risks and ways we can help our patients. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), 34 million Americans have diabetes, another 88 million have prediabetes and every 21 seconds someone is newly diagnosed. Currently, diabetes causes more deaths than breast cancer and AIDS combined!

The most common form of diabetes is type 2. Although there are many potential complications, such as heart disease and stroke, they can be prevented or delayed through structured lifestyle modification. What is lifestyle modification? It’s a program that promotes weight loss, healthy eating, and increased physical activity.

The CDC plays a critical role in preventing and delaying complications through its National Diabetes Prevention Program. This is a partnership of public and private organizations that was formed in 2010 to work to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. Partners make it easier for people at risk for type 2 diabetes to participate in evidence-based lifestyle change programs to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes.

Through the lifestyle change program, which focuses on healthy eating and physical activity, people can cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% (71% for people over 60 years old). If you’d like to find out if you are at risk for Type 2 diabetes, take the test below. Our team works with patients and facilities to encourage lifestyle changes, reduce the use of medications, and improve outcomes. If you have pre-diabetes, diabetes, are at risk, or know someone who is affected, contact us and let us help you.

If you’d like to support the ADA, there are many ways to do it. You can help raise funds and awareness by participating in the Tour de Cure, the Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes, or create your own fundraiser. Supporting such a worthy cause can go a long way to make progress against diabetes.
